how to use oVertone

How We Make Our Strand Tests

If you’ve browsed our product pages before, you’ve probably seen our strand tests and wondered if they’re true to real life. The answer? Always. Here’s why:

plumberry kit on platinum blonde strand test

1. Each product is swatched on various shades of human hair.

The lighter the shade, the more it has been bleached (and the more porous it is). This means that they reflect the porosity of the majority of oVertone users, who tend to have bleached hair.

If your hair is naturally medium blonde with little damage, rejoice! You have very healthy hair. That said, your hair is probably slightly less porous than our medium blonde swatch hair, which has gone through a round of bleach, so you can expect to see a slightly less saturated result than the swatch would imply. (Don’t be afraid to apply a second a time for brighter results on virgin hair!)

2. Each swatch is made with just one application of product on a dry strand.

Strands will look darker and more saturated with a second application, but we stick to the one. We use enough product to totally saturate every strand – usually a tablespoon or two – and we leave the product on the strand until the conditioner appears pale, indicating that the pigment has been accepted into the hair strands. That generally takes less than 5 minutes: the more porous the hair, the less time it takes to absorb. (Our platinum bleached blonde strands take the colour in about a minute!)

3. There is NO editing done on any of our strand tests with the exception of cropping the image.

We NEVER Photoshop hair other than color correction if our white balance was incorrect when we shot it. Changing the hair would defeat the purpose of showing you how it looks in real life.

4. For custom kits or mixtures, strand tests are always made with an approximate 1:1 ratio of the products being mixed.

The Plumberry Kit strand pictured would look different if you had only a touch of Vibrant Purple with mostly Extreme Pink, for instance.

    I have a question,
When I got my hair done it was bluish/ greenish, as i washed m hair almost everyday it faded and i wanna remove the colors and make it more Silver, what product do I use in this situation? Thank you!

  • oVertone says:

Hey Angela – Thanks for writing to us! How fast oVertone fades out of your hair depends on many factors – how often you wash your hair, the health and natural texture of your hair, how much time you spend outside, how many times you’ve used oVertone, etc. Since oVertone is most like a semi-permanent dye, your hair might not completely return to its original color without having a slight tint in it. Definitely check in with our Colour Experts at hi@overtone.co for advice on transitioning from your existing teal to a silvery shade x

  • Rob says:

Is the product applied on wet or dry hair for the test strands? Thank-you

  • oVertone says:

Our test strands are always dry.

  • Sam says:

How long does the color stay in?

  • oVertone says:

    Hey there, Sam!

The color deposited by oVertone conditioner will keep your hair bright and bold as long as you continue using it. While it isn’t designed for one time application, the colour deposited by one use will last about as many washes as a semi-permanent conditioner. x

  • Jennifer R says:

How long after having my Beautician color my hair Blonde can I use oVertone? Also should I do this with my hair dry or wet? Should my hair be freshly washed or can it applied to hair that’s not just washed, depending on the time of year it may be 2 days before I wash it. Last question since I work with horses and my head sweats in the summer will it stain my hat?

  • oVertone says:

    Hey there!

If you’re using oVertone to add initial color your hair, we recommend doing the initial coloring with the Deep Treatment, as their formulas have up to 50% more pigment than our Daily Conditioners and will help you get the colour you want faster!

Whether to use it on dry or wet hair is really up to you.

If you find that your results aren’t as bright as you’d expect when used on wet hair, then definitely try it on dry hair. Sometimes, wet hair doesn’t soak up pigment as well as dry hair. This really depends on your hair’s health and texture.

Whether you add oVertone to wet or dry hair, we definitely recommend that you use it on clean hair, in place of your normal conditioner and leave on long enough to fully saturate your strands with color, about 10-15 minutes.

A lot of our clients have developed their own routines for their specific hair type, so I encourage you to experiment to see what works best.

After you rinse out oVertone, your hair should have soaked up most of the color, so the water should rinse mostly clear. While your hair is wet it’s possible that you might see some color transfer onto towels and light colored shirts, but once it’s dry you shouldn’t see it transfer unless you’re rubbing your head against something for 8 hours. Same goes for being caught in the rain – once your hair is wet you might see a little transfer, but no dramatic flood off your head!

Once you’ve achieved your desired shade you can use the Daily Conditioner every time you wash to replace any color that’s lost and use the Deep Treatment once a week, or as needed, for an extra boost of color and hydration.

  • Danielle says:

I have dyed hair (bright auburn red that I was hoping would be more vivid), is overtone chemically safe to use over already-dyed hair? I’m thinking using one of the bright red deep conditioners could make my red more vibrant and get my color where I want it. I have fine hair and try to be gentle to it, so I tend to be cautious about using too many chemicals.

  • oVertone says:

    Hey, Danielle!

oVertone was totally designed to help maintain your salon shade! Our conditioners contain no harmful chemical – we want hair that’s bright AND healthy!

You can check out a full list of ingredients here: overtone.co/pages/ingredients.

For the best help choosing one of our Red shades or Custom Kits to maintain your auburn strands, we definitely recommend checking in with our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co – send them a pic of the shade you’re trying to maintain and they can tell you what to get!

  • Jenny says:

I have naturally light red hair that has faded with time-40years! I’d like to get that orange glow back. Will this help?

  • oVertone says:

Hey there! Lots of natural redheads use our Orange or Red shades to add a boost of supernatural brightness to their ginger strands! Our Copper Kit combines the two shades to add fabulous boost of coppery color.

  • Fariza says:

I’ve been wanting to temporarily colour my hair but I don’t want to bleach my hair since I want to keep my natural hair colour. So my question is; If I use oVertone, will my natural hair colour return?

  • Kara says:

Hi I was just wondering i currently have like bleach blonde hair but it still has the yellow tones and some spots that just won’t lighten. I’ve used purple shampoo before to take the yellow out but id like to get to pastel purple. what should i do to get the spots that are still a bit dark even first?

  • Faith Rodriguez says:

So is Overtone a semi permanent dye?

  • oVertone says:

Hey there! Although oVertone adds color like semi-permanent dyes can, it isn’t a dye at all, it’s a color depositing conditioner. What sets oVertone apart from semi-permanent dyes that have conditioning properties is the fact that it completely takes the drama out of keeping up your vibrant locks!

No more having to worry about staining towels; no more cool showers; no more gloves! You simply use oVertone like you would any other conditioner and, once a week or whenever you need an extra boost of color and hydration use the Go Deep Weekly Treatment instead of the Daily conditioner – it’s that simple! Check out this blog post on how oVertone is better than dye + white conditioner: http://blog.overtone.co/why-is-overtone-better-than-dye-conditioner.

Let us know if you have any questions – we’re here to help. x

  • oVertone says:

Hey there! It sounds like your best bet will be to use our Pastel Purple system. A little bit of diluted Pastel Purple Daily Conditioner on your yellow strands will help tone them to a neutral platinum, since yellow is opposite purple on the color spectrum. Once your hair has reached a neutral platinum shade, add Pastel Purple Deep Treatment to turn your locks a lovely lavender shade x

  • oVertone says:

oVertone works on all kinds of hair, but the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see. To get results similar to most of our inspo pics, you’ll probably need to lighten some or all of your strands and our Pastel shades or cooler tones like Blue, Green or Teal aren’t likely to leave much visible color on dark strands.

No worries, though! Lots of clients use our Extreme Deep Treatments in warm shades such as Pink, Red, or Orange are to add an awesome hint of color to dark hair without bleaching!

Which one helps the dye stay longer in your hair, the treatment or the conditioner?

  • Cindy says:

My hair has been bleached 4 times I currently have it blonde but I want to change it to silver would it damage it more if I use this product?

  • Tahlia says:

Hi! Does Overtone work on natural hair? I have natural medium-dark brown hair and am thinking of using extreme orange to get copper-brown hair. Should i dye my hair first for it to work properly? Thank you

  • oVertone says:

Our Deep Treatment is best for adding initial color, since it has up to 50% more pigment than our Daily Conditioners. Once you get to your goal shade, use the Daily Conditioner to keep your hair bright and healthy by adding back color and hydration with every wash x

  • oVertone says:

    Hey Tahlia!

oVertone works on all types of hair, but the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see. To get results similar to most of our inspo pics, you’ll probably need to lighten some or all of your strands.

Our Extreme Deep Treatments in warm shades such as Pink, Red, or Orange are the best choices to add an awesome hint of color to dark hair without bleaching!

  • oVertone says:

    Hey there, Cindy!

Applying oVertone on bleached strands shouldn’t do any damage – we designed oVertone to help keep your hair healthy and hydrated as well as to add and maintain color – but you should definitely check in with our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co! Silver can be a tricky color on hair that’s warmer or cooler than a neutral platinum, but they can help you get to the silvery strands of your dreams if you send them a pic x

  • Crystal says:

Hello. So I have black hair. It’s pretty dark. I read you recommended warm colors for dark hair. I was thinking of using a blue to just make my hair look like a deep blue black will I get that result or will it just look black?

  • Megan says:

I recently got my hair colored to a dark purple/plum color and I was thinking of getting overtone to keep up with the color but I’m unsure of which one to get.

  • oVertone says:

Hey there! That’s a great question, but the answer totally depends on what your hair looks like right now.

If your salon color is still fresh and bright, start with our Daily Conditioner – using it with every wash will keep your hair healthy and soft while adding back pigment with every wash to keep your strands as supernaturally bright as they did on day one of your new color. If your shade is starting to fade – or if you want to change your shade – our Deep Treatment is the best choice since it has more pigment and gives your hair a jolt of color and hydration.

To choose the best shade or custom blend of oVertone colors to match your gorgeous plum, send a pic to our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co x

  • oVertone says:

    Hey Crystal!

oVertone works on all hair types, but the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see. On brunettes, we usually recommend a warm shade in Extreme for the best, most visible results, but depending on your hair’s health, texture and undertones, it’s possible that our Extreme Blue might leave a slight blue black tint like you’re hoping for.

Your best bet is to try a sample size of our Extreme Blue Deep Treatment and do a strand test to make sure it shows up on your hair! If your strand test goes well, you can go for it and get the full size treatment for the blue black superhero hair of your dreams x

  • Betty J Young says:

I’m allergic to traditional hair dye so I’ve been using pure BAQ henna with another brand of vegan semi perm. hair color to boost the red for the past 7 years. Can I use Overtone the same way?

  • oVertone says:

Hey there! You definitely can try oVertone and it does work over henna colored hair. Definitely send an email to our Color Experts at hi@overtone.co for advice. Check out this blog post on henna and oVertone! http://blog.overtone.co/henna-and-overtone x

  • Nicole says:

Hi, my hair is naturally silver/grey. Can I expect the same colour results as the light blonde swatch?

  • Sylvia says:

I’ve got kind of a red ombré look going on. I’m a brunette, so my hair starts brown and then fades to red at the tips. If I use the daily conditioner, will it only make my ends more vibrant or will it dye my whole head? I want to keep my ombré look. Any suggestions to maintaining it that way?

  • oVertone says:

Hey there! If you apply oVer your whole head, it will help keep your ombred strands super bright and might add a bit of a subtle rosy or auburn tint on your dark strands. If you just want to use oVertone on your lightened bits, that’s totally ok too! Just be sure to section well when you apply it. • Andrea says:

Hi, I was just wondering if the pink deep wash will work on my hair because I have dark brown hair.

  • oVertone says:

    Hey Andrea!

oVertone works on all kinds of hair, but the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see. To get results similar to most of our inspo pics, you’ll probably need to lighten some or all of your strands. That said, there are some shades that work nicely on brown strands.

Our new Rose Gold for brown hair or our Extreme Pink Deep Treatment would be the best choices to add an awesome hint of rosy pink color to dark hair without bleaching! Definitely strand test before trying it over your whole head to make sure the color is visible in your hair.

If I have the underneath part of my hair green already and use this on brown hair will it tint the underneath that’s green but not really the top?

  • LeeAnn says:

I’ve been taking cool showers to maintain my current light auburn color, and I noticed in a previous comment you mentioned that wasn’t necessary when using oVertone. Really? Cause yeah, that would be awesome 🙂

Also, do you have any recommendations for what kind of shampoo to pair with your conditioners?

  • Holly says:

I have platinum blonde will the silver take? I just ordered it?

  • Connie Smeriglio says:

How does this work on grey hair? I like tinting my greys with extreme pinks ( I have salt and pepper dark brown/auburn ) and it adds a nice contrast. I have used Manic Panic but its just so messy. How will your product compare?

  • Peyton says:

I was wondering what I should do if I only want it to stay in my hair for a month?

  • Hannah says:

Hi! I have natural brown hair with a blonde balayage/baby lights running through it. I want to use the pastel pink on my blonde strands, if i use the pastel pink for awhile and decide i want my blonde strands to be blonde again will it take a lot of washes to get the pastel pink off of my blonde? Also, will it have any lasting color/effects on my blonde after a couple of washes once i no longer want it to be oastel pink? I dont want my hair stylist yelling at me when i go back to her to touch my blonde back up.

  • Jada says:

I’ve been dyeing my hair for over 15 years, and the past few have seen more and more white creep in. I thought white would be easier to dye, so I’ve been cheering on the arrival of the new “wisdom streaks” — turns out, though, that this new hair is stubborn! My blues and cool purples used to hang around for weeks, and now they fade in under a week, even after bleaching. I want to be vibrant again, not faded and “blah.” Any recommendations?

  • Sarah says:

Hi, I have strawberry blonde hair kind. I was wondering if the extreme pink would make my hair look orange or weird. Should I dye it a light brown first and then do the deep treatment?

  • Alee says:

    Hey Jada,

Results on natural gray hair can be tough to predict, since the strand structure of grays can vary a lot! We’d recommend seeing your stylist to lighten your strands, just a bit. Some clients, with natural gray strands, find that some gentle lightening can help change the structure of the strand to better accept pigments.

If lightening isn’t in the cards, consider using our Extreme Deep Treatments! They pack an extra punch of pigment that can break through more stubborn strands. Start off with a sample size to see how oVertone works in your hair – if you have any more questions, definitely email our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co!

  • Alee says:

    Hey Hannah,

How fast oVertone fades out of your hair depends on many factors – how often you wash your hair, the health and natural texture of your hair, how much time you spend outside, how many times you’ve used oVertone, etc. Since oVertone is most like a semi-permanent dye, your hair might not completely return to its original color without having a slight tint in it.

There are a few things you can do to help fade your hair fast and safely. Check out this blog post on how to fade your color: http://blog.overtone.co/how-to-safely-fade-your-hair/ If it hasn’t faded enough, from there you can see your stylist about bleaching.

  • Alee says:

    Hey Peyton,

oVertone will continue to deposit color as long as you’re using it, and once you stop you’ll see the color start to fade. • Alee says:

    Hey LeeAnn,

    Hey Jennfer,

oVertone will deposit color wherever you apply it, but the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see. I colored my hair to a violet brown color, and the violet is kind of fading. I also had light bleach to my hair before. What would you recommend in this case?

  • Alee says:

    Hi Kelly,

For the very best advice on choosing your oVertone shade, send an email with a picture of your current hair with lots of natural light and no filters along with an inspo pic over to our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co or get in touch with them here: https://overtone.co/pages/contact-the-unicorns and they will totally be able to let you know what’s going to work best!

  • Madeline says:

I ordered rose gold I have brown roots and blonde ends. My roots have some gray coming through. Should I only color my ends with the conditioner or can I apply it all over. I just don’t want “hot” roots.

  • Alee says:

    Hey Madeline,

Your results on your roots will really depend on the exact shade that you’re starting with. For the very best advice, send an email with a picture of your current hair with lots of natural light and no filters along with an inspo pic over to our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co or get in touch with them here: https://overtone.co/pages/contact-the-unicorns and they will totally help you out!

  • Elaina Jones says:

    Is this dye permanent?

  • Alee says:

    Hey Elaina!

oVertone Deep Treatments will add color to your hair on your first application, but we didn’t design it just to be a one-time hair color treatment – as soon as you stop using our conditioners, your hair will start to fade. How fast it fades will depend on many factors, like the health and natural texture of your hair, how often you wash it, how much time you spend outside, etc. but most clients find that a single use lasts about as long as a semi permanent color would.

  • Haniya Arshad says:

Hey there! I want to get the overtone color conditioners but I have really dark hair so should I get the extreme one’s or will I have to bleach my hair for a good result with those too?

  • Alee says:

Hi Haniya! For darker shades, we always recommend grabbing a sample size of an Extreme Deep Treatment in the shade of your choice. For the very best advice, send a picture of your hair in natural light without any filters to our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co and they will be able to help you out!

  • I have pure white natural hair. No where have I read that this will work on my hair. I would like your opinion since I have bought the overtone pastel pink deep treatment.

  • Alee says:

    Hey Peggy!

Results on natural white hair is really tough to predict – the strand structure of white hair varies so much from person to person. Since we can’t accept returns of opened products, consider grabbing an additional Sample Size of the Deep Treatment here: https://overtone.co/collections/samples/products/deep-treatment-sample-size or get with our Color Consultants (get in touch with them here: https://overtone.co/pages/contact-the-unicorns) before you use your Deep Treatment.

  • G says:

What is the longest amount of time that Overtone should be left on? I was watching a few videos on youtube and someone left It on overnight. Will that stain? If i left pastel pink on blonde hair for an hour would It stain my hair or just be more pigmented opposed to leaving It on for 10 min?

  • Alee says:

    Hey there,

While it’s totally safe to leave oVertone on as long as you like, the color is usually done depositing around the 15 min. mark! We don’t recommend leaving it on oVernight mainly because most people toss and turn while they sleep, which could result in a bit of a mess!

  • CathyH says:

My 11 year old granddaughter is just dying (no pun intended) for me to buy this so she can try the Extreme Pink Deep Treatment on her hair. She is bi-racial and her hair is very dark. I’m wondering if this product will even work on her hair. Any suggestions?

  • Alee says:

Hey Cathy! Clients with black or very dark brown hair may only show a very subtle tint from our products and in some cases might not have visible results, so if she has dark hair, we definitely recommend trying a sample size and strand testing her hair to see how the color will work for your granddaughter!

You can also send a picture of her hair with lots of natural light and no filters over to our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co or get in touch with them here: https://overtone.co/pages/contact-the-unicorns and they will totally let you know what oVertone can do for her!

  • Kaitlyn says:

Hi! I have naturally blonde hair that is platinum at some parts but has reddish strawberry undertones rather than ashy. If I were looking to take out some of the grassiness to get an ashier more silvery blonde should I use the pastel purple or pastel silver? And since my hair is pretty light would I have to leave it on for a shorter amount of time? Not trying to dye my hair purple or silver, just want more of an icey tone to it rather than brassy 🙂

  • Alee says:

Hey Kaitlyn! We always recommend using Pastel Purple instead of Pastel Silver to tone yellow brassiness out of blonde hair. As far as how long you leave it in, it really depends on your hair! If your hair tends to take color super well and quickly, less time is definitely a good option. You can also dilute with plain white conditioner and if your first strand test isn’t the perfect color – keep playing around with the ratios until you get the perfect mix!

For more personal advice on which color you should grab to tone, definitely send an email with a picture of your current hair with lots of natural light and no filters over to our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co so they can help out!

  • Julia says:

Did you try this Crystal? Any update?

  • Donna Palazzolo says:

What color would you suggest on dark brown hair ??

  • Alee says:

    Hey Donna!

oVertone works on all kinds of hair, but because it doesn’t lift or lighten at all, the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see. Clients with black or very dark brown hair may only show a very subtle tint from our products and in some cases might not have visible results, so if you have dark hair, we definitely recommend trying a Deep Treatment sample size and strand testing your hair to see how the color will work for you.

Our Rose Gold for Brown Hair and our Extreme Deep Treatments in warm shades such as Pink, Red, or Orange are the best choices to add an awesome hint of color to darker hair without bleaching!

Check out this video on how oVertone interacts with different hair colors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV6xJj9MZPY

  • Cristiane says:

    Hello!
My hair naturally is a shade of dark brown. It’s still dark, but I have lifted the hair so many times to get a redish/copper tone that now I messed it up. 🙁 Very light at the top, and darker downwards.
My hairdresser friend (who sadly leaves in another country) recommended me your product to keep the hair healthy and adding color to it bit by bit.
I need an advice regarding to which color to buy though. Since my hair originally is dark, but very thin at the moment, the hair at the top of the head gets lifted very easily so the color gets very bright. But the rest of the hair gets just a tone of the color.
Since this isn’t about lifting the hair, which product can I buy to at least start getting the color I would like, making it uniform and healthy?
    Thank you!

  • Alee says:

Hi Cristiane! What product to buy really depends on your current shade and the color you’re wanting to move toward! As far as being a uniform color, if your hair has a lot of different starting shades you might end up with multi-dimensional color in your hair. Results with oVertone are heavily dependent on your starting color, so your lighter colored strands will show a brighter color than your darker strands.

  • Katy says:

I have a milk chocolate shade of hair. Will rose gold look good on my type of hair? I’m thinking about getting this. I just want to do my tips the first time so should I get the deep treatment or the conditioner?

  • Alee says:

Hey Katy! If you’re using oVertone to color your hair or revamp your fading shade, we recommend doing the initial coloring with our Deep Treatment. Once you get to your goal shade, you can use our Daily Conditioner to maintain your shade and keep your strands super healthy and hydrated. You can then use the Deep Treatment again whenever you find that your hair needs a fresh boost of color and hydration.

  • Aelin says:

Will this dye hair thats been dyed by henna?

  • Emma says:

What colors would look best on naturally red hair?

  • morgan says:

I have medium brown hair and am hoping to go blue, do multiple uses intensify the color? Could i get to the color of blue I’m hoping for by using the extreme treatment multiple washes in a row?

  • Gshearer says:

Hi, I have a fairly dark hair, more like chocolate. I am wanting to do a fun color like the extreme blue you have shown, but I’ve seen the tests strand that’s closest to my hair color and it’s not quite as vibrant as I want. I was wondering, if I was to apply the overtone more to my hair, would I get a closer result as the blonde strand did?

  • Alee says:

Hey there! oVertone Color Conditioners definitely work over henna. Check out this blog post on henna and oVertone: http://blog.overtone.co/henna-and-overtone/

  • Alee says:

Hi there! oVertone Color Conditioners work on all kinds of hair, but because they don’t lift or lighten at all, the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see – we can’t get you a bright blue from dark brown shade with oVertone alone. That being said, for the more personalized advice, send an email with a picture of your current hair with lots of natural light and no filters along with an inspo pic over to our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co and they will totally help you out!

  • Christen says:

Would I be able to straightened and blow dry my hair with this product? Will the color fade when heat is applied to it? Will the color fade if I used a second conditioner after I’ve rinsed this conditioner out?

  • Emma says:

Hi, I have pastel pink hair and I’m trying to keep the pink bright and vibrant, but not highlighter pink which product would you recommend me.

  • Alee says:

Hey Christen! You shouldn’t see any fading from following up with your regular conditioner, but styling tools that use heat may accelerate the rate your color fades at. Regular blow dries or the occasional straightening/curling, shouldn’t affect it much! If you do see your color fading from your normal styling routine, make sure to use the Daily Conditioner with each wash to keep the color looking fresh and bright!

  • Alee says:

Hey Emma! Check out our Pastel Pink Daily Conditioner, it has 50% less pigment than our Deep Treatment and can add a super subtle pink tint to platinum strands. If the shade isn’t light enough for you, add some plain white conditioner to dilute the intensity even further! I m growing out my grey hair. Right now I have about an inch of growth. The rest of my hair is a golden blond colour. I started high lighting my dark hair about four years ago. I would like to make the golden blond look more silver to help with the transition. Will the silver shades work in achieving this look?

  • Maria says:

I have very dark brown hair, do you think the colors will show up on my hair? If so what are the best colors to go for in order to make sure the color shows the most!

  • Connie says:

My hair is dyed black and Keratin treated. I am currently growing out my gray. I only want to take a few strands of my hair and add gray to these strands to blend my hair as I transition to embracing my gray. I want to try the pastel gray. I know the dye reacts differently to everyones hair but would you advise me to try your product? Would I need to use more than just the pastel gray? another color?
    Thank you

  • Yolanda Rico says:

Do you have a sample available for your purple for Brown hair? I would love to try this!

  • Myriam says:

    Heyy

Hi Maria! oVertone Color Conditioners work on all kinds of hair, but because they don’t lift or lighten at all, the darker your starting shade, the less visible color you’re likely to see. Cooler toned shades like Green, Teal, or Blue can have a harder time showing up on darker hair, and it’s unlikely that our Pastel shades will show up if your hair is anything darker than platinum blonde.

Clients with black or very dark brown hair may only show a very subtle tint from our Color Conditioners and in some cases might not have visible results, so if you have dark hair, we definitely recommend trying an Extreme Deep Treatment sample size (grab one here: https://overtone.co/collections/samples/) and strand testing your hair to see how the color will work for you.

Not yet, but it’s coming! Stay tuned!

  • Alee says:

Hi Myriam! Our more-pigmented conditioners may stain skin and bathroom surfaces, but staining should be pretty easy to get rid of if it happens!

  • Jeanne says:

I have dark brown hair and I really want to try oVertone… Which colors do you recommend for my hair?

  • Tora Winchester says:

I’m black and I have dreadlocks, so I know dying my hair the color I want is going to be a bit of a task. I want to go silver. Right now, my dreads are a bright red and I know that I’ll need to lighten my hair considerably first. My question: do you think the silver conditioner will take to my hair/do you know if the product has worked well for other people with my hair type and style?

  • Syd says:

I have like a dirty blonde hair thats light brown underneath with really light highlights throughout that increase throughout the summer. im currently using the Sun In spray to help my hair lighten up some during the winter months. im looking to buy the original rose gold complete set. do i need all of this to achieve a light pink tint? what would you reccomend?

  • Alee says:

Hey Jeanne! Our warmer Extreme shades, such as Extreme Pink, Extreme Red and Extreme Orange can also have subtle but gorgeous results on brown and darker hair. Our Pastel shades and cooler colors like Blue, Purple or Green, will likely not show well on anything darker than blonde hair. Check out this video for some info on how oVertone Color Conditioners work with different starting shades of hair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGGsrPCK5Wo

  • Alee says:

Hey Tora! Since silver is basically a mix of all primary colors, the final result is heavily dependent on the starting hair color. A neutral platinum blonde base is your best bet for a true silver – hair that’s cool-toned can lead to blue strands, and hair that’s too warm can lead to green strands. • Alee says:

Hey Syd! The best way to use our conditioners is to add color with our Deep Treatment since it contains 50% more pigment than our Daily Conditioner, and maintain your shade with our Daily Conditioners (and another shot of Deep Treatment whenever your hair needs a fresh jolt of color and hydration). Check out this blog post to learn more about coloring your hair with oVertone Conditioners: https://blog.overtone.co/how-to-use-deep-treatment/ For personalized advice, get with our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co with a photo of your current hair of what you’re looking to get!

  • BJo says:

Hi — my hair is bright white (naturally). I’d like to have peachy streaks, but not all-over color. How do you advise applying color for streaks? And is the color likely to work on my white hair?

  • Alee says:

Hey there! Results on gray and white hair can vary a lot from person to person since the strand structure of those hair types can vary a lot and while some clients have hair that takes color really well, others find their grays can be somewhat resistant to absorbing pigment from – it’s just a matter of your hair’s texture. Check out this blog post on how gray hair and oVertone Color Conditioners interact: https://blog.overtone.co/overtone-on-gray-hair and definitely get with our Color Consultants at hi@overtone.co for more info!

  • Gretchen says:

I have blonde blonde balyage and when I want to strip the overtone colors I use a sulfate shampoo. After 2 shampoos it goes away to the original bleached hair color.

  • Cenise Richmond says:

I have blonde highlights and I wanted to add rose gold color to my blonde highlights but I don’t want it to be super Pink So I was thinking of mixing the silver and the rose gold would that make an ugly color or would it just make the pink lighter?

  • Alee says:

Hey Cenise! Thank you for your patience. Mixing our silver formula with our original Rose Gold can result in a purple mauvey tone! If you’re looking to achieve a subtle hint of color, we recommend diluting your Rose Gold with some plain white conditioner!
