Using oVertone on Short Hair

Short hair may not tangle as much as long hair, but it does have challenges of its own. Fortunately, oVertone is just as easy to use with short hair as it is with long. Here’s what you should know:

The closer your hair is to your scalp, the healthier – and less porous – it is.

Porosity determines how well your hair will accept pigment, and healthy, young hair will accept less pigment than porous, damaged hair. You may find you’ll need a darker shade than the average person to get the same depth of color. Or, you can apply a second time for extra saturation.

Stain alert!

Very short hair won’t cover up little stains, so keep an eye out for stray conditioner. Our model Charly applied petroleum jelly around her hairline so that any conditioner drops would just wipe off easily. She also used a Pastel shade, and her scalp was not stained at all! For Vibrant or Extreme users with light skin, you may find that the jolt of bright pigment in those shades also transfers to the scalp. However, it should come out easily with a little rubbing the next time you shampoo.

Use a mirror

If you miss a spot, it’s really obvious with short hair! Use a mirror to make sure you have even coverage – especially at the nape of your neck, where it’s easy to forget.

If you’ve recently cut your hair, know that your roots are not as light as your ends once were.

Your newly short hair hasn’t had time to lighten in the sun, and though you were once a natural honey blonde that took color easily, your short hair may now be a medium brown, which reflects color very differently.

Have you ever considered a ‘normal’ treatment color like ash blond that would color my greys and med ashy hairs in a nice natural, blended look?

Hi Anita! We don’t have any natural looking shades yet, but it’s always a possibility! In the meantime, you can send an email with a picture of your current hair with lots of natural light and no filters along with an inspo pic over to our Color Consultants at or get in touch with them here: and they will totally let you know what oVertone can do to get you there!

there is a small amount of bleached hair on the top of my buzzed head. The rest is natural. What would you suggest for an even outcome. I plan on using the the pastel silver deep treatment and the pastel purple daily conditioner for a smoky purple.
