Intersections of Beauty is a platform to celebrate unique perspectives, aesthetics & life experiences within the industry and our communities. We believe that beauty isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s FOR all.
October is Global Diversity Awareness Month and is meant to be a moment to reflect on the impacts of globalization, celebrate and learn about cultures different from our own, and take both individual and collective action to preserve and honor these differences.
A key term to understand is Globalization – what does it mean, and why is it important when we talk about global diversity?
Globalization is a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place. The effects of globalization have led us to have a greater understanding of each other and our world, created opportunities to appreciate and learn from each other, and increased our ability to collaborate.
However, it has also led to exploitation, cultural erasure, and severe environmental damage. Those who benefit from globalization are typically rich, Western countries, who through these practices continue to get richer and expand their power and cultural influence. Some scholars and activists point out that the impacts of globalization and colonization are similar, and as such are rightfully concerned that marginalized economies and cultures will suffer or disappear around the globe due to the influence and prioritization of Western voices, practices and economies.
How do we ensure that cultural privilege doesn’t create a world of harmful, oppressive sameness? We have the power to reject cultural hierarchy and create true equity of opportunity and recognition for those whose voices have been devalued on the global stage.
Global Diversity Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to reset our commitments to seeking out and embracing new-to-us ideas, challenging oppressive structures at the macro and micro levels and celebrating how through our differences we are able to add so much more to our world and communities.
