Ever wonder what’s happening in (or on top of) the heads of oVertone’s staff? Each month, we’re getting one of our resident mermaids, unicorns, or aliens to dish on how they live boldly – and stay that way!
Next up is Kayla, one of our Client Services Unicorns – if you’ve sent us an email, you might have talked to her yourself! When she’s not giving clients a personal helping hand, she’s here doing hair science and writing tutorials for our blog so readers can keep their hair on point! You can find her on Instagram as @kaylita_nicole and Snapchat as @kaylitacakes.
What color(s) do you have on your head right now?
Extreme Orange, faded to a pastel shade!
How did you achieve your look? Maintain it?
After letting my original Vibrant Pink ombre fade, I strand-tested Vibrant and Extreme Orange (and modeled for another blog post!) to see which color I wanted to change to. I decided to go full-throttle into orange and picked Extreme. It was a huge change, and kind of startling to see when I looked in the mirror, but I loved it!
To maintain my color, I’d just use the Daily Conditioner about once a week – my hair held onto the color really well, and since Extreme Orange is SO ORANGE, I didn’t feel like I needed the extra pigment in the Go Deep!
Favorite color (combo) you’ve ever rocked? Any plans for what’s next?
Orange is my favorite, for sure! I thought I would really love pink hair, and it was nice, but orange won my heart.
Next? I keep saying maybe blue, or maybe purple. I also keep dreaming of going totally pastel – have you SEEN how amazing Liora’s Pastel Teal is? – but I might need to take baby steps toward something like that. But every time I see pictures of my orange hair before I let it fade, I start thinking about reapplying that…
Oh my gosh – I really don’t know!
How long have you been dyeing your hair?
So, many years ago – okay, it was probably four years ago – I did my very first ombre. It was just to blonde, so nothing too out there. I didn’t do anything after that until I came to oVertone! Fantasy hair is still pretty unique to me, but I’m totally happy to be in the unicorn realm!
Best part of having fantasy hair?
I love that if I’m not styled and 100% put-together – even if I’m just in my sweatpants at the grocery store – I’ve still got this super-awesome hair that says who I am. It really makes a statement!
How about the most challenging part?
Probably that in-between stage when you’re transitioning colors, where your hair’s not quite the old color, but hasn’t faded out enough for you to move onto the next one. Luckily, oVertone can make it super-easy to move from color to color, if you want to!
Got any coloring or styling hacks to make working with your hair easier?
Ooh, yeah. Moisturize your hair! Every couple weeks I do a coconut-oil treatment – I’ll melt 2 tablespoons or so in the microwave and use it to saturate my hair. It can take a while to wash out – sometimes two or three shampoos for me! – but afterwards it feels amazing. Your hair will be so happy! And if you hate to cut your hair as much as I do, it will help keep split ends at bay, too.

There’s this quote I found on Pinterest that I love, and try to live by: “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” So take risks and go on adventures… including hair adventures!
